How far apart should control joints be on a concrete slab?
The rule of thumb is 24 to 30 times slab thickness. For a 4 in slab, 8 to 10 ft between joints; for a 5 in slab, 10 to 12.5 ft; for a 6 in slab, 12 to 15 ft. Expansion joints are placed where a slab abuts a fixed structure and at intervals of no more than about 30 ft in continuous flatwork. Rules follow ACI 302.1R and PCA slab guidance. §01Control-joint spacing by slab thickness
Control joints are the planned cracks in a slab. They give the slab a defined place to relieve shrinkage stress so the crack does not appear where it is not wanted. The general rule is 24 to 30 times slab thickness in feet.

The lower end of the range is preferred for higher-shrinkage mixes (higher water content, higher cement content) and for slabs restrained at their edges. The higher end is acceptable for lower-shrinkage mixes with less restraint.
§02Aspect ratio — square panels are preferred
Panels between joints should be as close to square as possible. An aspect ratio (long side to short side) greater than about 1.5 : 1 concentrates shrinkage stress along the long axis and cracks the panel in half, which defeats the point of the joints. A 12 ft × 12 ft panel is ideal for a 5 in slab; a 12 ft × 20 ft panel is not.

§03Joint depth and timing
A control joint has to be deep enough to induce the crack and cut soon enough to induce it before the slab cracks on its own. The general rules:

Joint depth is the load-bearing part of the rule; if a joint is too shallow, the slab will crack somewhere else instead.

Expansion joints (properly called isolation joints, because they isolate the slab from adjacent restraint) are placed where a slab meets a fixed structure and at intervals in long continuous flatwork.
